Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Domestic Silence by Scroobius Pip
“…But then out of nowhere everything changed when a voice said “Hi there, how are you today?” Six simple words, seven simple syllables. It doesn’t always take grand gestures or miracles. When in hell a hiding place can seem grace and free from pain, but umbrellas keep sunshine out as well as rain. He discarded all the fears that his silence had been masking and said “Yeah, I’m good. Thanks for asking.”

Some of the artists I mentioned in here made me lol
So I was having a conversation with someone today and this is what i got told..“Rap is just noise.” Not wanting to argue I simply left it by saying I’m not wasting my time with this conversation. It just got me thinking. Rap/Hip Hop seems to me to be one of the most hated and looked down upon genres of music…
Now i hear this a lot as well.. so and so ”..doesnt look like they listen to rap.” What does that even mean? There is a way someone looks that puts them into some kind of musical genre? I’m assuming when someone says that they are thinking of some dirtier ghetto rap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk6OnbsEtok) which i still dont see how that can be spotted by simplying looking at someone. Do I look like I listen to that? O.o
I think when the majority of people think of Rap/Hip Hop they think of the stuff they are exposed to over the radio. This music is typically garbage. It’s music made simply for the sole purpose of making money. It’s commercial. Now I understand how one might want to dance to this music, club to this music, and/or party to it. It usually consists of a cool beat and terrible lyrics. Ive said this many times before but anyone can make a song with lyrics that rhyme and make no sense to a sweet beat that ppl will dance to, it takes someone with actual talent to write good meaningful lyrics and even be able to put them on a not so good beat. lyrics>beat. Its the artists that get that flipped around that make the bad music that ppl hear on the daily and classify that as what hip hop is. No offense to the people that make beats tho. I know that takes skill as well and props to you if you can do it well.
Ive been listening to the Lasers album by Lupe Fiasco and regardless of what he even thought of it, its fantastic. There’s more intellegence in the words in that album than most of what ppl listen to. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AZxolIJU74) Tell me another genre that puts so much knowledge in their lyrics. Ive seen pictures and so many quotes that say things like rap music is for idiots and all that. I to no extent understand that. Ive heard nothing close to the intellect and heart put into the rap songs i have in any other genre.
Now what rappers do I listen to? primarily its only a few at the moment. P.O.S (I’ve NEVER heard music i like more, also hes from MN), Lupe Fiasco, Machine Gun Kelly, Murs, Kanye West (you might not like him cuz hes an asshole but you rlly cant put down his music. If you think any of his songs dont have a deeper meaning than i challenge you to ask Mr. Ryan Babb himself what the meaning behind it is and I guarentee you he will give you a ridiculous but true meaning, Ive seen it done on a daily basis) Tyler The Creator (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSbZidsgMfw so much symobilism in that video), Grieves, and Kid Cudi.
I try to support the local music as much as I can. I dont know of much but I’d loveee to hear more things from the Twin Cities. The Twin Cities have a rlly great music scene. There’s obviously the bigger people that are from here, like P.O.S for example, who I’ve already mentioned. He’s underground and that tends to be where the good music comes from. The people that are underground because thats where they wanna be. They make music because thats what they like to do, and its a form of art and an escape. They dont do it for the money. I’m sure if someone like him wanted to go commercial he could. Also have to mention ppl like Enve, Midwest Konnect, and Niles Miller (Ive only heard his first mixtape awhile ago and idk if he has anything else since then but hes def worth checking out, legitimately good in my opinion).
Okay I think im done ranting for now. Now Im not saying all rap is good, I believe this is obvious. I’m just saying you cant judge a whole genre on the commercial things you hear. I hate the people that do that and the close minded people that don’t give things a chance.
I will try to keep everything up to date and post as frequently as information is released to the street team and other news.
This will include anything F to I to X related so:
- Kill The Vultures
- No Bird Sing
- Mixed Blood Majority
- Kristoff Krane
- Coloring Time
Give me a follow, reblog posts, and let’s get these great artists heard!
